Dark Pages: Rumors Swirl Around Ex Libris and Alleged Human Skin Bindings
By Veronica Valentine - Lead Reporter
RICHLAND — A quiet, upscale rare book dealer in the Tri-Cities has become the center of a deeply unsettling controversy. Ex Libris, long known among collectors for its curated selection of antique and occult texts, now faces allegations that some of its volumes may be bound in human skin.
The claims, first whispered in private collector circles, surfaced publicly after an anonymous source provided documentation and photographs suggesting that several books in the store’s private collection exhibit characteristics consistent with anthropodermic bibliopegy—the practice of binding books in human skin.
While rare, the practice is historically documented, primarily in the 17th through 19th centuries. Experts stress that confirming such materials requires extensive forensic testing, including peptide mass fingerprinting, a method not yet publicly reported in connection with the Tri-Cities case.
According to the source, who claims to have attended a private viewing at Ex Libris, certain books were not displayed to the general public. Instead, they were shown only to “trusted clientele” behind closed doors.
A. Valentine- owner of Ex Libris - provided the following statement:
- “The use of human skin for book binding has been well documented throughout history; however, it is much more rare than media sensationalism would have the public believe. In my work as a Museum Preservationist, I have had the opportunity to consult on the preservation of several notable examples. The Mega Tri-Cities Historical Preservation Society Collection of rare books is one as such. Ex Libris boasts a litany of books bound in leather and even vellum, but you'll find our stock lacking any bindings in human skin. Though to the layman, old leather can be quite similar in appearance.”
[Two photos provided of a museum display piece of human skin bound text and a display from Ex Libris bound in sheep leather from the early 18th century. The two look similar, but side by side, it is clear their material is different]
Local historians and librarians expressed both skepticism and concern. Representatives from nearby institutions emphasized that legitimate collections undergo strict provenance verification.
“This is the kind of claim that demands evidence,” said one archivist who asked not to be named. “But if proven true, it raises serious ethical and legal questions.”
Law enforcement agencies, including the Richland Police, have not confirmed any active investigation. However, a spokesperson acknowledged that “concerns regarding potentially illicit artifacts” had been reported.
The situation has drawn particular attention from niche academic and esoteric communities. Ex Libris has, in the past, hosted invitation-only events focused on obscure religious texts, funerary rites, and apocryphal works.
Some observers note that the alleged bindings align with historical practices associated with ritualistic preservation or symbolic ownership, although such claims remain speculative.
As rumors spread, curiosity seekers and concerned citizens alike have begun gathering outside the shop during evening hours. For now, Ex Libris remains open, its windows displaying leather-bound classics.
But behind those polished shelves, questions linger.
Are these merely sensational rumors fueled by the mystique of rare books?
Or is something far darker bound within the walls of Ex Libris?
Veronica Valentine will continue to follow this story as it develops.
Nau Tau Delta Seeks Image Overhaul Through Partnership with Newly Formed Sorority
By Kelsey Chandler - Reporter
MEGA TRI-CITIES — After declining membership, strained alumni relations, and mounting public scrutiny, the fraternity Nau Tau Delta is making a calculated attempt to stabilize its reputation. In a statement released late Tuesday, the organization announced a formal partnership with a newly formed sorority known as Zeta Phi Alpha. This name has already begun circulating with quiet intrigue across campus circles.
The announcement comes at a critical moment for Nau Tau Delta. Once a dominant force in the region’s Greek life scene, the fraternity has struggled to maintain relevance amid internal disputes and waning interest from prospective members. University officials have not imposed formal sanctions, but sources indicate that continued oversight and pressure from administration have left the organization with little room for further missteps.
According to the joint statement, the partnership will focus on “shared initiatives, community visibility, and the development of a stronger, more unified presence.” What that looks like in practice, however, remains unclear.
Zeta Phi Alpha, despite its sudden prominence, appears to have no established history within the traditional Greek system. There are no archived records of its founding, and little information is available regarding its leadership or origins. Even so, the group has quickly positioned itself as a key player in Nau Tau Delta’s recovery efforts.
Observers note that the sorority’s early involvement has been unusually coordinated. Within days of the announcement, plans for joint events, outreach programs, and a high-profile spring gala have already begun circulating. Promotional materials are polished, messaging is consistent, and access to resources appears…significant.
“It’s not typical for a new organization to move this quickly or this smoothly,” said one campus insider who requested anonymity. “Most groups take months, if not years, to build this kind of infrastructure.”
Supporters of the partnership argue that Nau Tau Delta is taking necessary steps to modernize and adapt, particularly in an environment where public perception can shift rapidly. Critics, however, question whether the collaboration is a genuine effort at reform or a strategic maneuver to manage optics.
There are also growing whispers surrounding Zeta Phi Alpha itself. Students and faculty alike have begun speculating about who, exactly, is behind the organization, and how it has managed to establish such a strong presence so quickly.
Mysterious Explosion Levels Kennewick Warehouse, Investigators Puzzled by Unusual Evidence
By Paul Barnaby - Crime Reporter
KENNEWICK — Authorities are scrambling for answers after a massive explosion reduced a warehouse in the Kennewick district of Mega Tri-Cities to rubble late last night. While initial findings confirm the presence of C4 explosives at the scene, officials say the material alone does not explain the nature or scale of the blast.
Emergency responders were dispatched shortly after 3:13 a.m., when multiple calls reported a thunderous detonation that shook nearby buildings and briefly knocked out power across several blocks. Witnesses described a flash of light followed by a concussive wave strong enough to shatter windows nearly a quarter mile away.
“It didn’t sound like anything I’ve ever heard before,” said one nearby resident. “It wasn’t just an explosion. It felt like the air got pulled out and slammed back in.”
Fire crews battled secondary fires for hours before declaring the scene under control. No official casualties have been reported, though authorities have not ruled out the possibility that individuals may have been inside the structure at the time of the blast.
Investigators from federal and private sectors have confirmed traces of military-grade C4 at multiple points within the wreckage. However, experts are quick to note that the pattern of destruction does not align with a standard explosive event.
“C4 was present, yes,” said one analyst who asked to remain anonymous. “But it doesn’t behave like this on its own. The burn patterns, the way the structure failed, suggest something else was involved. Something we’re not identifying yet.”
The warehouse itself was reportedly owned by a shell corporation with limited public records. Attempts to trace its operations have so far led to a dead end, raising further questions about what activities may have been conducted inside.
Local officials are urging calm but acknowledge the unusual nature of the incident.
“We understand the public is concerned,” said a Kennewick district spokesperson. “At this time, there is no evidence of an ongoing threat, but this investigation is active and evolving. We are pursuing every lead.”
Flash Mob Protest Erupts at Francis Wellness Center Over Access Inequality
By Veronica Valentine - Lead Reporter
PASCO — What began as a quiet afternoon at the Francis Wellness Center quickly transformed into a scene of coordinated disruption as dozens of protestors staged what they are calling a “Flash Mob Protest,” drawing attention to what they claim is a growing divide in access to healthcare.
Shortly after noon, many participants, dressed in spa robes, yoga attire, and surgical masks, filtered into the center’s lobby and surrounding grounds. One was even dressed as “The Dude” from The Big Lebowski. At first glance, the gathering appeared almost performative: guided breathing exercises, synchronized stretching, and soft ambient music played from portable speakers. Within minutes, however, the tone shifted.
Chants broke out among the group, targeting what organizers describe as “luxury medicine for the privileged.” Signs emerged from tote bags and rolled mats, bearing slogans such as “Wellness Isn’t a Luxury” and “Spa Days for Some, No Care for the Rest.”
The Francis Wellness Center, long marketed as a premier destination for holistic health services, has faced increasing criticism in recent months for its high-end offerings ranging from personalized detox regimens to exclusive, membership-based care programs. Critics argue that such services highlight a stark contrast to the barriers many residents face when seeking even basic medical treatment.
“I can’t get a tetanus shot without jumping through hoops,” said one protestor, who identified herself only as Mara. “But if you’ve got money, you can walk in here and get a full-body reset, no questions asked.”
Organizers of the demonstration framed the event as both protest and performance, deliberately mirroring the center’s branding. At one point, participants lay motionless across the entryway in a coordinated “rest cycle,” symbolizing what they described as systemic neglect. Security staff monitored the situation but did not intervene as long as entrances remained passable. Local law enforcement was present on the perimeter but reported no arrests.
In a brief statement, the Francis Wellness Center acknowledged the protest, emphasizing its commitment to “innovative health solutions” and “community well-being,” though it did not directly address the concerns raised.
The demonstration dispersed as quickly as it formed, with participants leaving behind a scattering of pamphlets and a lingering question: who, exactly, gets to be well?
As conversations around healthcare access continue to intensify across the Mega Tri-Cities, today’s flash mob may be less an isolated incident and more a sign of growing unrest just beneath the surface.
Mystery Statues Stir Controversy, Then Find a Future in Kennewick’s Greenscape Plans
By Lawrence Redding - Reporter
KENNEWICK — Residents of downtown Kennewick were met with a strange and somewhat scandalous surprise earlier this week: 54 statues, placed seemingly overnight, scattered throughout sidewalks, plazas, and public corners.
The statues, each distinct in form but unified by what many have described as “suggestive” or “provocative” design, quickly became the talk of the city. Some depict abstract human figures in intimate poses, while others lean more symbolic, leaving interpretation to the imagination. None were accompanied by plaques, artist signatures, or permits.
“I turned the corner and nearly spilled my coffee,” said one downtown business owner. “It’s art, sure, but it’s bold art.”
City officials initially scrambled to respond, with public works crews dispatched to assess the installations and determine whether they posed any safety or legal concerns. Early speculation ranged from guerrilla art activism to an elaborate promotional stunt. As of now, no individual or group has claimed responsibility.
Public reaction has been sharply divided. Some residents have called for immediate removal, citing concerns over appropriateness in family-friendly areas. Others have praised the installations as an unexpected cultural injection into the city’s urban landscape.
“It’s the most alive downtown has felt in years,” said a local college student. “People are stopping, talking, reacting. That’s what art is supposed to do.”
In a surprising turn, the Kennewick City Council announced late Wednesday that, rather than removing the statues, they would explore integrating them into the city’s upcoming downtown revitalization project, specifically within planned topiary and greenscape enhancements.
“We recognize the strong reactions these pieces have generated,” said a council spokesperson. “While their origins remain unclear, there is an opportunity here to thoughtfully incorporate them into a broader vision for public space, one that balances artistic expression with community standards.”
Preliminary concepts suggest the statues could be partially obscured or reframed through strategic landscaping, woven into hedges, garden installations, and sculpted greenery to create a more curated and contextual experience.
Not everyone is convinced.
“There’s a difference between embracing art and endorsing something inappropriate,” said one concerned parent during a public comment session. “Hiding them in bushes doesn’t change what they are and what they appear to be doing.”
Still, the council’s decision signals a willingness to adapt rather than erase, turning an unexpected disruption into a potential centerpiece for downtown’s evolving identity.
As the city moves forward with its greenscape plans, one mystery remains unsolved: who placed the statues, and why?
Until then, the people of Kennewick are left navigating a downtown that is, quite literally, more revealing than ever.
String of Unsettling Incidents Raises Questions Across the Mega Tri-Cities
By Veronica Valentine - Lead Reporter
KENNEWICK — City officials are urging calm this week following a series of strange and seemingly unrelated incidents occurring across the Mega Tri-Cities area, although some residents are beginning to suspect a deeper connection.
Over the past fifteen days, emergency services have responded to an unusual spike in calls ranging from infrastructure failures to violent disturbances, with no clear explanation tying them together.
Hospital Blackouts & Missing Time Reports
Kadlec Regional Medical Center experienced two separate power failures late one Sunday night, each lasting less than three minutes. Backup generators engaged properly, yet several staff members have reported “missing time” during the outages.
One nurse, speaking on condition of anonymity, described waking up in a different wing of the hospital with no memory of how she got there.
Kadlec has attributed the event to “grid instability,” though internal sources confirm an ongoing review.
Rise in Cult Activity?
Local law enforcement has noted an uptick in reports of unusual gatherings in abandoned properties, particularly near the riverbanks and older neighborhoods of Pasco.
Witnesses describe robed individuals, bonfires, and chanting in languages “not immediately identifiable.” Police have dispersed several groups but made no arrests.
A spokesperson for the department stated:
“At this time, we have no evidence of organized criminal activity. It’s probably just some college kids and some sort of initiation.”
Tech Sector Breach Raises Alarms
A major tech firm, Lucid Circuit operating out of Richland, reported a significant data breach earlier this week. While details remain classified, sources suggest the intrusion targeted archived files, some dating back decades.
Cybersecurity analysts involved in the response described the attack as:
“Highly sophisticated, intentional, and… strangely selective.”
Unusual Animal Behavior Along the Columbia
Residents along the Columbia River have reported aggressive and erratic animal behavior, including birds striking windows en masse and nocturnal animals appearing during daylight hours.
The Department of Fish and Wildlife has begun an investigation but has yet to release findings.
A City on Edge
While officials maintain that these incidents are isolated, the timing and clustering have left many uneasy.
“I’ve lived here thirty years,” said local shop owner Maria Alvarez. “You get weird stuff now and then, sure. But not like this. Not all at once.”
Authorities continue to encourage residents to report suspicious activity and avoid restricted areas.
For now, the Mega Tri-Cities watches and waits.

Nu Tau Delta House Condemned — Fraternity Responds with Massive Blowout Party
By Veronica Valentine - Lead Reporter
The Mega Tri-Cities University fraternity Nu Tau Delta is making headlines again—this time for turning disaster into debauchery. Following an official condemnation notice from city inspectors citing severe structural instability and multiple code violations, the fraternity responded in true Nu Tau Delta fashion: by hosting what attendees described as “the biggest kegger MTCU’s ever seen.”
City officials ordered the fraternity house to be vacated earlier this week, after engineers discovered warped supports, extensive water damage, and a questionable attempt at “DIY renovations” in the basement. Rather than comply quietly, the brothers allegedly tapped every remaining keg, strung up lights from the caution tape, and threw an impromptu send-off party that drew hundreds of students and alumni.
Police Reports of Gunfire and Drug Activity
The Mega Tri-Cities Police Department confirmed that multiple 911 calls were received during the event and prior to it, citing gunfire, loud music, and possible narcotics use. Officers responding to the scene found spent shell casings in the alley and evidence of controlled substances, though no arrests were made at the time. One officer described the scene as “chaotic but somehow coordinated, like a music festival with less safety regulation and more red Solo cups.”
This marks the latest in a long line of incidents tied to Nu Tau Delta, whose parties have previously drawn citations for noise violations, underage drinking, and indecent exposure. Despite repeated warnings, the fraternity remains a staple of MTCU’s off-campus nightlife.
Alumni Seek a New Home
Sources within the Nu Tau Delta alumni network say that efforts are already underway to secure a new chapter house, possibly on the north side of campus near the old Sigma Psi property. “The house may be gone, but Nu Tau Delta isn’t going anywhere,” said alumnus Ryan “Rhino” Caldwell. “We’re looking for a structure with fewer cracks and more party potential. Maybe even an indoor pool!”
Until then, the displaced brothers have reportedly been “crashing wherever there’s a couch, a fridge, and Wi-Fi.”
University Response
MTCU issued a brief statement this morning:
When asked whether disciplinary action was being considered, a spokesperson declined to comment, though campus rumor suggests the fraternity may face suspension pending investigation.
For now, the legendary Nu Tau Delta house stands empty, its sagging porch and boarded windows serving as a cautionary monument to the motto painted across its crumbling walls:
“Party Hard. Study Later.”
Tragedy Strikes Our Lady, Yet Again
By Louise Penner - Reporter
In the midst of recovering from the devastation of the tanker explosion in the parking lot last month, the hospital is once again beset by tragedy.
According to a statement released by the building's manager, Ruth Abbott; "Late Saturday night, an unknown number of suspects circumvented the administration building's security and gained access to multiple areas before leaving. It is unknown at this time what their motives were. Our administration building holds no sensitive information on patients or billing. As the investigation is still ongoing, we have no further comments at this time."
Anyone with information is advised to call the Pasco Police Department or the TIPS Hotline 509-555-7014.
The Labubu Bandit Strikes Again, Third Heist Adds “Bizarre Trophy Collection” to Infamy
By June Park - Reporter
The Labubu Bandit, the Mega Tri-Cities’ most unpredictable thief, has struck for the third time in as many months, baffling investigators and captivating residents with another round of inexplicable loot choices and cryptic calling cards.
Authorities confirmed early Thursday morning that the latest target was the West Richland Curiosity Shop, a locally beloved boutique known for its eclectic mix of antiques, taxidermy, and limited-edition collectibles. The break-in occurred sometime between midnight and 3 a.m., with security footage showing a figure in a distorted Labubu mask, a grinning goblin-like creature from an obscure toy line, dancing through the aisles before disappearing with several items.
What was taken this time defies all logic. According to the shop owner, the missing inventory includes: A glitter-encrusted lawn flamingo from the 1970s, A mint-condition Pokémon Charizard Card, Half a mannequin wearing roller skates, A first press of Tumbthumper, and an entire display of mismatched coffee mugs. The thief reportedly left behind a plastic toy bat and a handwritten note reading simply, “Art is theft. Stay weird.”
Detective Morgan Kline of the Mega Tri-Cities PD described the ongoing case as “equal parts art project and crime spree. We’re dealing with someone who isn’t stealing for profit,” Kline said. “They’re making a statement or at least, trying to. It’s a performance crime. Honestly, the coffee mug thing still keeps me up at night. Why an entire display of them?!”
Mystery Thief Plunders Safety Deposit Boxes
By Alyssa Romero - Reporter
A wave of high-profile bank burglaries has left both authorities and victims scratching their heads this week, as investigators try to unravel a string of precision thefts targeting safety deposit boxes across the Mega Tri-Cities. The only thing left behind at each scene? A 2x4-foot mirror, positioned deliberately inside the vault.
Police are calling the unknown perpetrator the “Mirror Thief.”
According to Mega Tri-Cities Police spokesperson Lt. Herrera, three major financial institutions, Tri-Cities Federal, Horizon Trust, and Columbia River Bank, were hit in the past ten days. In each case, the thief bypassed alarms, motion sensors, and reinforced vault doors without leaving a single trace of forced entry.
Unlike most heists, no cash was stolen from teller drawers or vault reserves. Instead, the thief emptied safety deposit boxes belonging to private citizens and small businesses, removing jewelry, documents, rare coins, and keepsakes.
The 2x4-foot mirrors discovered at each scene were propped against the far wall, reflecting the open vault doors. Forensic technicians report no fingerprints, no tool marks, no residue; the department has not publicly confirmed.
Community on Edge
With no suspects, witnesses, or security footage to work from, the Mirror Thief’s motives remain as opaque as the glass they leave behind. Local banks have increased after-hours patrols and are urging clients to temporarily remove irreplaceable items from deposit boxes.
Four Dead, Several Missing After Sewer Investigation Gone Wrong
By Veronica Valentine - Lead Reporter
A routine public works investigation turned deadly this week after a crew of city employees failed to return from a scheduled inspection of the Mega Tri-Cities sewer system, prompting a large-scale search and eventual discovery of four deceased workers in a drainage access tunnel beneath the east industrial corridor.
At least three additional workers remain unaccounted for, and city officials have since suspended all non-essential sewer operations pending a federal investigation.
According to initial reports, the crew entered the system late Monday morning to investigate complaints of “unusual vibrations” and “pressure fluctuations” in a mainline junction near the riverfront treatment plant.
By evening, radio contact had been lost. Rescue teams entered the tunnels overnight, eventually locating the bodies of four workers early Tuesday morning. The victims’ identities have not yet been released pending family notification.
Army Corps of Engineers to Investigate
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has been officially called in to assess the system, citing both public safety concerns and the possibility of deeper geological instability beneath the city. A spokesperson for the Corps confirmed that specialized teams will begin subsurface mapping and ground-penetrating radar surveys within the week.
Public Works in Crisis
The Department of Public Works is now facing a staffing emergency, as many employees have reportedly resigned following the incident.
Maintenance delays are already being felt across the city, with minor sewage backups reported in several neighborhoods. Officials urge residents to avoid flushing hazardous materials or large debris while crews focus on stabilization and recovery efforts.
Freedom’s Light Hosts Winter Gala to Combat Sex Trafficking in the Mega Tri-Cities
This December, the Mega Tri-Cities will see one of its most anticipated charity events of the year as Freedom’s Light Foundation hosts its annual Winter Gala, an elegant evening dedicated to raising both funds and awareness to combat human trafficking in the region.
The gala scheduled for Saturday, December 14th, at the Orpheum Ballroom will bring together civic leaders, business owners, and advocates to shine a light on one of the city’s most pressing and underreported issues: the rise of sex trafficking and exploitation along major transport corridors connecting the Tri-Cities to larger metropolitan areas.
An Evening of Elegance and Impact
The Winter Gala will feature a formal dinner, silent auction, and live musical performances by local artists, along with keynote addresses from survivors and community leaders. Proceeds from the event will go directly toward expanding Freedom’s Light’s Safe Haven Program, which provides emergency housing, counseling, and legal aid for victims escaping trafficking networks in the Mega Tri-Cities.
Guests are encouraged to wear winter whites or silver, symbolizing “light in the darkness,” a motif central to the organization’s mission.
Corporate sponsors already on board include Betelle, Hapo, Lampson, Columbia Basin Health, and Riverfront Realty, with donations of both funds and services pledged to support the cause.
Tickets and Participation
Tickets for the gala are $125 per guest, with all proceeds going toward the Safe Haven Expansion Initiative. Donations can also be made through the foundation’s website for those unable to attend in person.
Freedom’s Light representatives say they hope this year’s event will surpass last winter’s fundraiser, which raised over $2,985,000—enough to open two transitional apartments and fund 3 years of crisis hotline operations.
Lighting the Way Forward
The Winter Gala marks not only a night of community and compassion but a call to action. As cold weather settles over the Tri-Cities, Freedom’s Light hopes to remind residents that rescue, rehabilitation, and restoration are possible and that awareness is the first step toward ending trafficking in their own backyard.
